Japan Club celebrates spring early with celebration demonstration
Soybean-throwing festival takes place at Middle Tennessee State University
Setsubun is a spring celebration where people gather with decorated masks and throw beans at each other to ring in the new year in Japan. The soybean throwing is a great photo opportunity, and many people will be there for interviews. The event is a great opportunity for a cultural appreciation piece, which is important since there is such a large Japanese population in Nashville.
WHAT: Setsubun celebration with event education, mask decorating and soybean throwing.
WHO: Japan Club officers and members.
WHERE: MTSU Boutwell Dramatic Arts (BDA) Building room 301. Parking will be available in the Reese Smith lot behind the baseball field. See attached parking map for detailed instruction.
WHEN: Friday, Oct. 30, 2020, at 3 p.m.
MEDIA: Officers and members will be staying after the event for interview opportunities. The club supervisor requests notification from reporters so she can buy more materials for journalists to take part in the event if they wish.
PHOTO OP: The soybean throwing portion will be the best time for photo opportunities. The throwing part will happen in the green in front of BDA. The best place for photos will be between the throwers and those being thrown at.

Middle Tennessee State University’s Japan Club was established by a group of friends in 2019 after rebranding from its old identity as Japanese Language Table, originally established in 2014. The club encourages students to share Japanese culture. It hosts information sessions regarding study abroad, educational movie nights and fun game nights.
